L’Escargot Dort: The Snail Sleeps is Steve Rapp’s third collection of poems in the trilogy that began with Double Chai Quilt (Harvard Bookstore 2016) and continued in An Ancient Face (Harvard Bookstore 2017). Like the first two collections, L’Escargot Dort spans the past 30 plus years, including ideas recorded in the journals filled during his life and travels in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe in the late 1980’s.

The title is a reference to an African proverb. The compact saying represents a cultural admonishment to live life to its fullest: Don’t be lazy! Go out and live life! When traveling in western Africa, he frequently saw this proverb painted on motorcycles, cars, and trucks, in either French or English. A form of it can even be heard in South African Zulu.

This collection also includes a number of poems that Rapp wrote over the past year as he watched his father’s health deteriorate. And although his father succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis in July, given the depth and range of his father’s life experience, including an enviable travel log, Rapp believes his father understood long ago the meaning of “l’escargot dort.”

All proceeds from sale of this book will be donated to the American Lung Association.

On January 27th, Steve Rapp will be reading L'Escargot Dort as a fundraising event for the American Lung Association in memory of his father, Peter Rapp (Jan. 14, 1933 - Jul. 3, 2018). More information about the event can be found here.
