Merton G. Henry grew up on a subsistence farm in Hampden, Maine during the Depression and spent his teenage years in South Portland. This is a brief account of his childhood in rural New England.
About the Author
Merton G. Henry was born in Hampden, Maine in 1926. He joined the Army after high school and served in the Philippines during World War II. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1950, then moved to Washington to work as a staffer in the U.S. Senate, while attending night law school at George Washington University. He married Harriet Putnam, a law school classmate, and the couple moved to Portland, Maine, where Henry practiced law and devoted himself to public service.
