A CONVERSATION ABOUT INTELLIGENT DESIGN WITH MARC D. HAUSER, SETH LLOYD & LISA RANDALL
Harvard Book Store is excited to announce that on Tuesday, September 19th we will host a panel discussion about the new book Intelligent Thought: Science Versus the Intelligent Design Movement with Marc D. Hauser, Seth Lloyd, and Lisa Randall.
Evolutionary science lies at the heart of a modern understanding of the natural world. Darwin’s theory has withstood 150 years of scientific scrutiny, and today it not only explains the origin and design of living things, but highlights the importance of a scientific understanding in our culture and in our lives.
Recently the movement known as “Intelligent Design” has attracted the attention of journalists, educators, and legislators. The scientific community is puzzled and saddened by this trend–not only because it distorts modern biology, but also because it diverts people from the truly fascinating ideas emerging from the real science of evolution. Intelligent Thought, an anthology edited by John Brockman, collects the writings of fifteen thinkers whose clear, accessible, and passionate essays reveal the fact and power of Darwin’s theory, and the beauty of the scientific quest to understand our world.
Marc D. Hauser, an evolutionary psychologist and biologist, is Harvard College Professor, Professor of Psychology and Program in Neurosciences, and Director of Primate Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at Harvard University. He is the author of The Evolution of Communication and Wild Minds: What Animals Think. Professor Hauser will speak about his new book Moral Minds: How Nature Designed Our Universal Sense of Right and Wrong, on Monday, October 9 as part of the Harvard Book Store Fall 2006 Event Series.
Seth Lloyd is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a principal investigator at the Research Laboratory of Electronics. He is also adjunct Assistant Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. Lloyd has been featured widely in the mainstream media including the front page of The New York Times, The LA Times, The Washington Post, The Economist, Wired, The Dallas Morning News, and The Times (London), among others. His name also frequently appears (both as writer and subject) in the pages of Nature, New Scientist, Science and Scientific American.
Lisa Randall studies particle physics and cosmology at Harvard University, where she is Professor of Theoretical Physics. Her book Warped Passages: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Universe’s Hidden Dimensions, was included in the New York Time’s list of 100 notable books of 2005. Professor Randall will speak about this book on Friday, October 6 as part of the Harvard Book Store Fall 2006 Event Series.
