Define-A-Thon 2007!
You’ve heard of spelling bees. You may have even participated in the Harvard Book Store-sponsored Bee last fall. But are you ready to take the next step at the Define-A-Thon 2007? Join us on Thursday, April 19th, as Harvard Book Store, the Brattle Theatre and Houghton Mifflin join forces to present the American Heritage Dictionary Define-a-Thon. What will the evening consist of, you might ask? Books. Beer. Prizes. And the smartest people in the Boston area testing their word-knowledge against their peers. If you love crosswords, Latin, the English Language and having your friends and colleagues cheer you on (or mock you), there is no other place to be on April 19th. The Define-a-thon is a game of vocabulary strength that ups the ante on word-based competition. Developed by the editors of the American Heritage Dictionary, this quick-paced game takes participants beyond the spelling bee. Why? Because the ability to spell a word doesn't necessarily mean that you know how to USE the word. American Heritage Dictionary Senior Editor Steve Kleinedler will host the game. He'll give each contestant a definition, followed by several possible answers. The contestant must choose the correct one. As the competition progresses, the degree of difficulty increases until two contestants are left. These two players will enter the final round with new rules and higher stakes. The winner of the Define-a-thon will receive an American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition and the two runners-up will receive American Heritage College Dictionaries. Winners will also receive Harvard Book Store totes and passes to the Brattle Theatre. Tickets for entry are $5. Buy advance tickets online at www.brattlefilm.org, or at the Brattle Theatre the evening of the event. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to compete on stage are $5, and you’ll receive a copy of 100 Words Every Word Lover Should Know.
