Back ON THE ROAD A Fifty-Year Retrospective on Kerouac's Beat Classic with John Leland and Joyce Johnson
In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Harvard Book Store presents John Leland, author of Why Kerouac Matters, and Joyce Johnson, author of the award-winning Minor Characters: A Beat Memoir (and Kerouac's former girlfriend) in a conversation about the mid-century Beat classic. In Why Kerouac Matters: The Lessons of On the Road (They're Not What You Think), Leland argues that On the Road still matters because at its core it is a book full of lessons about how to grow up. Leland’s focus is on Sal Paradise, the Kerouac alter ego, who has always been overshadowed by his fictional running buddy Dean Moriarty. Leland shows how On the Road is a primer for male friendship and contends that the stereotype of two wild and crazy guys obscures the novel’s core themes of the search for atonement, redemption, and divine revelation. In Minor Characters, winner of the National Book Critics Cirle Award. Johnson portrays her relationship with Kerouac with wit, love, and a cool, critical eye. The Washington Post called Minor Characters "the safe-deposit box that contains the last, precious scrolls of the New York '50s."

John Leland is a reporter for the New York Times and former editor in chief of Details, and he was an original columnist at SPIN magazine. Robert Christgau of the Village Voice called him "the best American postmod critic (the best new American rock critic period)," and Chuck D of Public Enemy said the nasty parts of the song "Bring the Noise" were written about him. He lives in Manhattan's East Village with his wife, Risa, and son, Jordan. The Washington Post called his first book, Hip: the History, "an impressive achievement.... He seems to know everything there is to know about hip."

Born Joyce Glassman to a Jewish family in Queens, New York, Joyce Johnson was raised on Manhattan's Upper West Side, just around the corner from William S. Burroughs's apartment. While attending Barnard, Johnson met Allen Ginsberg through a mutual friend, and Ginsberg set Johnson and Kerouac up on a blind date. Johnson has published stories and novels and taught writing at Columbia University, University of Vermont, and New York University.
