The Regattabar and Harvard Book Store are pleased to welcome BOB BLUMENTHAL for a reading and discussion of his first book, an introduction to jazz styles and history, part of a Smithsonian series published by HarperCollins. Blumenthal is the two-time Grammy winner for album notes and former jazz critic for The Boston Globe and The Boston Phoenix. Legendary jazz saxophonist and three-time Grammy winner BRANFORD MARSALIS will join Mr. Blumenthal in conversation.
With his new book, Blumenthal has written a perfect introduction to understanding jazz, whether you are approaching the music for the first time or seeking to deepen your knowledge. Inside you will find the people who made the music, the history, listening suggestions, jazz trivia, and more. Can you dig it? Former Boston Globe columnist Bob Blumenthal has been writing jazz criticism since 1969 and has contributed to numerous publications. He has received Grammy Awards for Best Album Notes and the Jazz Journalists Association's Excellence in Newspaper, Magazine, or Online Feature or Review Writing Award and a Jazz Journalism Lifetime Achievement Award.

World-renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis, born in 1960 in New Orleans, has always been a man of numerous musical interests. The three-time Grammy winner has continued to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, a composer, and the head of Marsalis Music, the label he founded in 2002 that has allowed him to produce both his own projects and those of the jazz world’s most promising new and established artists. Mr. Marsalis has performed and recorded with a who’s-who of jazz giants including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Hancock, and Sonny Rollins.
