PETER SINGER and RICHARD STEARNS
discuss the fight against global poverty
The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University and Harvard Book Store present a conversation with PETER SINGER and RICHARD STEARNS on the crisis of global poverty and the responsibility of individuals and organizations to take concrete action. Peter Singer, acclaimed bioethics professor and atheist, argues in his book The Life You Can Save that the industrialized world's response to poverty is ethically indefensible and that living an ethical life must involve giving one's resources to the cause of fighting poverty. In The Hole in Our Gospel, Richard Stearns, president of the Christian humanitarian organization World Vision United States, argues that living a Christian life involves living out one's faith by taking action to care for the poor and fight the systemic causes of poverty. Although the two men approach the global poverty crisis from markedly different vantage points, they ultimately agree on a powerful call to action, and their books challenge Americans to take a look at the choices they make and reflect on what they can be doing to take action on the most urgent issue of our time. Through a moderated discussion we will explore their two perspectives and contrast the motives of why various groups of people might take action against poverty. The discussion will continue with a question and answer period with the audience to further deepen the exchange.
