Independence Day News from Harvard Book Store
July 1, 2011

Tickets are on sale now for our July 14th event with Benjamin Black!  (In case you hadn't heard, Black is the not-so-secret nom de plume for Booker Prize-winning author John Banville.) He'll be reading from his latest mystery, A Death In Summer. And later in July, we're hosting a reading + screening with Sapphire, author of The Kid and Push, the book behind the Academy Award-winning film, Precious. Get your tickets now!

Cory Doctorow, creator of the popular website Boing Boing and general awesome internet guru, WALHhas authored numerous books, including Little Brother and Makers. Now, in typical Doctorow fashion, he's turned the traditional publishing model on its head and created With A Little Help, a collection of stories available in a profusion of formats. We're printing up fresh copies on Paige, our book-making robot, for only ten bucks a pop. Also: if  you find a typo in the book, email Cory and he'll fix the error and give you credit on the next version of the book. Community collaboration! Learn more about this experimental project on Cory's website. Stop in the store to pick up a copy today or order one by clicking right here.

From the Department of Heck Ya, Fireworks!: The store will close at 8pm on Monday, July 4th.

Happy Independence Day,
Heather

 Ladies and Gentlemen: Stories

by Adam Ross

$25.95
Knopf, hardcover
Order
"Whereas Mr. Peanut was a dazzling--and sometimes overly complicated--postmodern hall of mirrors, the stories in this volume are old-fashioned, almost O. Henryesque tales that point up . . . Mr. Ross's extraordinary gifts as a writer. . . . Not only does Mr. Ross possess glittering powers of description and a heat-seeking eye for emotional and physical detail, but he's also able to capture the way people talk today with fluency and panache. Though he tends to view the relationships between men and women through a shadowy, melodramatic prism, he is adept, when he wants to be, at showing the day-to-day stresses and consolations of marriage and mapping the mutations of love over time." --The New York Times

 The End of Country

by Seamus McGraw

$26
Random House, hardcover
Order
"[An] impressively detailed, highly engaging look at issues of energy policy, economics, and sociology that arose when a bucolic town was suddenly faced with the 'traveling circus' of energy exploration. McGraw presents a rich history of the economics and geopolitics of energy as well as a fascinating cast of characters. . . . A completely engaging look at how energy policy affected a quiet, rural town." --Booklist (starred review)

Scholarly
Scholarly Spinoza Now

edited by Dimitris Vardoulakis

$27.50
University Of Minnesota Press, paperback
Order
Engaging with Spinoza's insistence on the centrality of the passions as the site of the creative and productive forces shaping society, this collection critiques the impulse to transcendence and regimes of mastery, exposing universal values as illusory. Spinoza Now pursues Spinoza's challenge to abandon the temptation to think through the prism of death in order to arrive at a truly liberatory notion of freedom. The essays gathered here extend the Spinozan project beyond the disciplinary boundaries of philosophy to encompass all forms of life-affirming activity, including the arts and literature.

Aging Gracefully With Dignity, Integrity and Spunk Intact
by Norma Roth

$18.95
Print on Demand, paperback
Order
In her new book, Norma Roth asserts that while science is predicting that members of the Silver Generation and Baby Boomers face unlimited opportunities and expanded possibilities, outmoded societal attitudes would send those who enter "that age" out to pasture. Her book is a practical roadmap to the lifelong developing process that Erik Erikson and his wife Joan foresaw in Vital Involvement in Old Age and The Life Cycle Completed: Extended Version. Roth sees a larger landscape of continued development, participation, and contributions for those entering "that age," including the smart and savvy Baby Boomers.
