News from Harvard Book Store
October 14, 2011

This weekend we wish a very happy birthday to our distinguished neighbor across the street, as Harvard University celebrates its 375th anniversary. Visit Harvard 375 to view an anniversary photo book; video interviews with alumni, faculty, staff, and students; and for information about events for both the Harvard community and the public.

If you don't have plans for this weekend yet, drop by the Boston Book Festival for a full Saturday of literary activities. The weather is looking promising (knock on wood) and the line-up is stellar.

On this side of the river, tickets become available Saturday at noon for this year's Cambridge READS main event. On Tuesday, October 25th, Sebastian Junger will discuss his groundbreaking work of reporting War. Tickets are free, and can be picked up at Harvard Book Store and other locations in Cambridge. You can find full details here, along with a complete schedule of this year's Cambridge READS programming.

'Til Next Week,
Rachel

 The Marriage Plot
by Jeffrey Eugenides

$28
Farrar, Straus & Giroux, hardcover
Order
While everyone else in the early 1980s was reading Derrida and studying semiotics, English major Madeleine is happily absorbed with Jane Austen and George Eliot, purveyors of the marriage plot that lies at the heart of the great English novels. She becomes enamored of the charismatic Leonard and is pursued by the adoring Mitchell, resulting in a love triangle worthy of Jane Austen. In his long awaited new novel, Middlesex author Jeffrey Eugenides brings the classic Victorian marriage plot to a modern American college campus, reviving the motivating energies of the novel and the love story.

Scholarly Early Writings:
1910-1917

by Walter Benjamin

$27.95
Belknap Press, hardcover
Order
Walter Benjamin became a published writer at the age of seventeen, yet the first stirrings of this most original of critical minds--penned during the years in which he transformed himself from the comfortable son of a haute-bourgeois German Jewish family into the nomadic, uncompromising philosopher-critic we have since come to appreciate--have until now remained largely unavailable in English. Early Writings, 1910-1917 rectifies this situation, documenting the formative intellectual experiences of one of the twentieth century's most resolutely independent thinkers.

 Gale Force:
Gale Cincotta; The Battles for Disclosure and Community Reinvestment

by Michael Westgate

$20
Print on Demand, paperback
Order

As the nation watches the Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Boston protests, the lives of our greatest activists become newly relevant. Called the mother of community reinvestment, Gale Cincotta led the attack on redlining, community disinvestment, and predatory lending. Her efforts resulted in two groundbreaking measures, the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) and the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), which broke the back of housing discrimination throughout the nation. Tough, feisty and courageous--characteristics in short supply these days--she was a force of nature with a human heart.
