"When people were picking up hobbies to wile away the early pandemic days, mine was the New York Times crossword. I've become obsessed. But while the Times crossword is arguably the most prestigious in this country, it's also just a narrow slice of the crossword world, not least because it has been historically very male and very white. That is slowly changing, but there have also emerged a number of other publications seeking to broaden access and representation in the puzzling world. The Inkubator is one such resource. Kickstarted in 2018, its mission is to publish professionally constructed and edited crosswords by women and nonbinary creators, particularly those that might not be published in more mainstream venues because of "feminist, political, or provocative content." Their subscription site is an excellent addition to your regular crossword habit, and this first collection shows off some of what they've done.
For even more excellent puzzling, Crucinova is another subscription-based publisher doing innovative things with the crossword form."
