News from Harvard Book Store
May 6, 2012
One of our favorite local nonprofits, 826 Boston, is gearing up for their second Night of 1,000 Stories. The evening will feature renowned authors Richard Russo and Lois Lowry, as well as students of 826's afterschool programs, as they tell 1,000 stories in a single night. Click here for ticket details and information about how to contribute to 826 Boston's programming.

Last week I mentioned the range of Mother's Day and graduation cards on display at the store. You still have a week to pick out the right card for Mom, so stop by for one of these or any of our many other options.

The end of the academic year is a great time to step back and think critically about the efficacy of our educational institutions. Pick up a copy of My Absurd Vision of Harvard: An Inquiry into Ancestors, Humility, and Occupy (only $3!) in the store to read Peter Winsor Pruyn's ideas for how to help our illustrious neighbor "to strive to be a space that fosters equality, education, and humanity" (from a review of the book).

Lastly, there's only one week left to pledge toward the bright future of literary and cultural journal The Baffler. To learn more about the journal and how you can help, visit their Kickstarter Project page.

'Til Next Week,

Fiction They Eat Puppies, Don't They?
by Christopher Buckley

$25.99

Twelve, hardcover

In an attempt to gain congressional approval for a top-secret weapons system, Washington lobbyist "Bird" McIntyre teams up with sexy neocon Angel Templeton to pit the American public against the Chinese. When Bird fails to uncover an authentic reason to slander the nation, he and Angel put the Washington media machine to work, spreading a rumor that the Chinese secret service is working to assassinate the Dalai Lama. "Hilarious. . . . What makes it laugh-out-loud funny is Buckley's sense of how little you have to exaggerate to make Washington seem absurd." --The New York Daily News

Nonfiction Culinary Intelligence: The Art of Eating Healthy (and Really Well)
by Peter Kaminsky

$24.95
Alfred A. Knopf, hardcover
Order
Peter Kaminsky--who has written cookbooks with four-star chefs and no-star chefs--shows us that anyone can learn to eat food that is absolutely delicious and doesn't give you a permanently creeping waistline. "For most people, good health and hedonism make strange bedfellows. But for Peter Kaminsky, eating for pleasure is eating for longevity: the two go hand in hand, and happily.  His brilliant new book, Culinary Intelligence, isn't formulaic or abstemious.  It's a culinary doctrine deeply rooted in flavor, making cooking and eating well something to look forward to." --Chef Dan Barber

$24.99
Cambridge University Press, hardcover
Order

Noam Chomsky is one of the most influential thinkers of our time, yet his views are often misunderstood. In this previously unpublished series of interviews, Chomsky discusses his iconoclastic and important ideas concerning language, human nature, and politics. In dialogue with James McGilvray, Professor of Philosophy at McGill University, Chomsky takes up a wide variety of topics--the nature of language, the philosophies of language and mind, morality and universality, and the evolution of language. McGilvray's extensive commentary helps make this incisive set of interviews accessible to a variety of readers.
