Cambridge Forum welcomes renowned art critic SEBASTIAN SMEE and art history professor of the University of Massachusetts Boston PAUL TUCKER for a discussion of their respective works Lucian Freud and Kenneth Noland: Paintings, 1958-1968.
About Lucian Freud:
British artist Lucian Freud is widely considered the most important figurative painter working today. Master portraitist and specialist in nudes, Freud uses impasto to create depth and intensity while restraining his color palate to mostly muted hues. His portraits may be physically unflattering to their subjects, but they are honest, frank, and unapologetic. "I paint people," Freud has said, "not because of what they are like, not exactly in spite of what they are like, but how they happen to be."
About Kenneth Noland: Paintings, 1958-1968:
American abstract painter Kenneth Noland (1924-2010) was one of the primary exponents of Color Field painting. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Noland began using two central motifs that would have enduring significance in his work: the circle and the chevron. These seemingly reductive forms also conjured military badges, corporate logos for cars and other consumer products that were omnipresent in postwar America. Kenneth Noland: Paintings 1958-1968 is the first major publication on the artist since his recent death. In it, art historian Paul Hayes Tucker explores Noland's history as a soldier in the United States Army and his subsequent re-entry into a burgeoning American consumer society, portraying his art as inextricable from atomic age America. The book also features rare photographs of the artist as a young man and full-color reproductions of Noland's early formative work.

- If you are requesting a personalized inscription and/or requesting your book be shipped, we'll need to take down credit card information. If you are planning to pick up the signed book in the store, you can pay on pick-up.

Can I request a personalized inscription?
Unless otherwise noted, we are happy to take requests for the author to sign your book to a specific person, but we can't guarantee it. If you do get a personalized inscription, the book will be non-returnable. We will require credit card information when you place the order.
Do signed books cost more?
There is no extra fee for a signed book!
Do I have to pick it up in the store, or can you deliver my signed book?
As with all web or phone orders, we can hold your book for in-store pickup, or ship it anywhere in the country.
I am planning to attend an author event. Do I need to pre-order a book?
No need. We'll be selling books at the event, and nearly all of our events include a signing at the end of the talk.
