In the shortest month of the year, our thoughts turn to short stories.

Backstory

In February 2010, Harvard Book Store announced a unique literary project—we would create a brand new book, utilizing our brand new book making machine, in 28 days. The result, Microchondria: 42 Short Short Stories Collected by Harvard Book Store, was an anthology of micro fiction submitted by writers from across the country, produced on our state-of-the-art print-on-demand machine, “Paige.”

Five years later, we have a revamped, updated Espresso Book Machine. To celebrate this even statelier-of-the-art bookmaking technology, we’ve got another 28 days to make something awesome happen. It’s time for Microchondria II: 42 More Short Short Stories Collected by Harvard Book Store.

But this can’t happen without you.

A Call for Entries

Starting Sunday, February 1st, you’ll have just under two weeks to write and submit stories of no more than 500 words. Then Harvard Book Store staff will have two weeks to review the submissions, pick their 42 favorite stories, and assemble them into a book that we will print in-store on Paige.

This time we’re also asking designers out there to design and submit eye-catching cover artwork, and we’ll pick up to three of our favorites.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 pm on Friday, February 13th. Update: The deadline for submissions has been extended to 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 15th.

We’ll print the first copy of Microchondria II on or before March 1st. Then, on March 7th, we’ll celebrate the book’s publication with an in-store launch party featuring selected readings by some of the collection’s contributors. We’ll be printing copies during the event, so you can learn more about custom book printing and get a book hot off the presses with the cover of your choice.

Writers and designers whose work is selected for publication will receive one contributor copy plus a waived “Advanced Set-Up Fee” ($50 value) on a future Paige publishing project.

Get writing! Get designing! Let’s make this little month count!
